[...] While traveling recently, other passengers were talking. I was listening. Primarily these people were not birders at all, but they were nice people with similar interests with each other. One sweet lady said “You seem to see a lot more birds than I do.” That seemed like an invitation to explore birds with her. Her urban life surely explained her total lack of interest in outdoor activities She could not identify a maple tree or a predator if her life depended upon it. The educator in me came forward and we continued to share. I never guessed it would be worthwhile to reach for my birding binoculars. [...]

[...] |On a recent trip| I was on a trip recently. I heard the passengers. Most of these people were not birders at all, but they were nice people with many common interests with each other. One dear lady commented, “You seem to see a lot more birds than I do.” That seemed like an invitation to share birds with her. The entirely urban background she described explained her total lack of interest in outdoor pursuits. She could not identify a tulip tree or a hawk if her life depended upon it. Since I have always been an educator we continued to share. I never guessed it would be worthwhile to reach for my birding binoculars. [...]

Thanks Lola for your kind words. It is one step at a time. When we learn to respect each other's differences and to speak the languages they understand, we all benefit. Sharing what we know and care about is a trait that humans can enjoy. The best way to learn is the old "Stop. Look. Listen." You may enjoy my Birding ECourse too. http://birdsight.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php#comments-form

That was a great article It's true that most people don't recognize a lot of nature in the city, even when it's right under their noses. It's nice that your friend has someone like you to open her eyes!! Keep up the good work.
