Bird Words
This is the beginning of the Glossary page.Words to explain Birds and Binoculars are sometimes not the most familiar things in our everyday language, so I will be adding to this section to include words that are known to birders or ornithologists that might be of interest or importance to you too. More will follow at a later date.
My random list of bird words for now:
-
FIELD OF VIEW refers to the area of visible coverage at a distance of 1000 yards. So you might see a reference to so many linear feet at 1000 yards or converted into metrics. Also the angle of view will affect the size of the area you can see and how deep into the field your binocular vision is effective.
- PELAGIC- this refers to birds that live at sea rather than on the shore or on land. It comes from the Greek word for sea. It means that which is related to open water rather than inland waterways.
- RAPTOR- this is a bird of prey. It comes from a Latin word meaning seize by force. Any carnivorous bird or hunting bird is a bird of preay. Like a hawk, an owl, an eagle.
